IFWA organizes and participates in many special writing events including:
Workshops
Each year IFWA organizes a reasonably priced, local writing workshop for a limited number of members. Past workshop leaders include such distinguished writing professionals as Robert J. Sawyer, Ben Bova, Mike Resnick, R. Scott Bakker, Connie Willis, Jack McDevitt, James Alan Gardner, Edo van Belkom and others.
Readings
Throughout the year there are opportunities for IFWA members to read publicly at venues such as bookstores and libraries.
Retreats
Two times per year IFWA organizes an informal retreat where members can gather for the weekend and dedicate time to writing. There is no cost and it is not an overnight thing (unless you want to write all night!). Saturday night features readings and a pizza party.
Con-Version
Con-Version
is Calgary's speculative fiction convention. IFWits participate in both panels, such as the popular Writers at the Improv, and on the entertainment side of things, with radio-plays, a cabaret and readings. IFWA also holds a contest in association with Con-Version. Winners and a link to the contest website appear here.
Other
There are often other, less formal events such as barbecues, movie nights and fundraisers. IFWits who attend other conventions and events report back to the group at monthly meetings.
